Routes that actually work
Utah itineraries, with the driving hours included
Five routes from five to nine days. Every one lists the real time behind the wheel — which is the number most Utah trip plans quietly leave out.
Before you pick
The honest maths of a Utah road trip
The classic mistake is to treat the parks as destinations and the driving as dead time. In southern Utah the driving is the trip, and the distances are larger than they look on a map.
A full Mighty 5 loop from Salt Lake City back to Salt Lake City is roughly 1,500 km. Spread over seven days that is 210 km a day — sustainable. Spread over five days, it is 300 km a day on top of hiking, which is not a holiday.
Three rules make every itinerary better:
- Never move base two nights in a row if you can avoid it. Unpacking is a tax.
- Keep the longest drive for arrival and departure days, not the middle of the trip.
- Cut a park before you cut a night. A rushed park is worse than a skipped one.
One-way versus loop
One-way (Las Vegas in, Salt Lake City out) saves you a long return drive but adds a drop-off fee, often $100–$300. It is usually worth it if the alternative is a six-hour return leg at the end of the trip.
Route one
The 5-day southern sampler
Las Vegas in, Las Vegas out. Zion and Bryce done properly, with no park rushed and no day over four hours of driving.
-
Day 1
Las Vegas → Springdale
2 h 45 m. Collect the car, drive northeast through the Virgin River Gorge, arrive by mid-afternoon. Walk the Springdale strip, watch the cliffs turn orange at sunset, sleep at the gate.
-
Day 2
Zion Canyon
First shuttle. Angels Landing if you have a permit, otherwise Scout Lookout. Afternoon at Emerald Pools. This is the day the trip is for — do not over-schedule it.
-
Day 3
The Narrows, then east
Early river hike to Orderville Canyon (about 3 hours). Lunch, then drive 1 h 50 m to Bryce Canyon City via the Mount Carmel Tunnel. Catch sunset at Sunset Point.
-
Day 4
Bryce Canyon
Sunrise at Sunrise or Bryce Point. Queens Garden and Navajo Loop — the 4.6 km figure-eight. Afternoon on the scenic drive to Natural Bridge. Optional ranger astronomy programme at night.
-
Day 5
Bryce → Las Vegas
4 hours via US-89 and Interstate 15. Stop at Red Canyon on the way out — it is 20 minutes from Bryce and almost nobody stops.
What you skip, and why that is fine
Moab and Capitol Reef. Adding them would push this to nine days and turn a good trip into a driving exercise. If Moab is non-negotiable, use the 7-day route instead.

Route two
The 7-day Mighty 5 loop
The classic circuit: Salt Lake City south to Zion, then back north through Bryce, Capitol Reef and Moab. Every park, one continuous loop, no backtracking.
-
Day 1
Salt Lake City → Springdale
4 h 30 m. The longest drive of the trip, deliberately placed on day one. Break it in Beaver or Cedar City. Arrive for an evening view of the Watchman.
-
Day 2
Zion
Full day in the canyon. Shuttle at first light, Angels Landing or Scout Lookout, Emerald Pools in the afternoon. Kolob Canyons on the way in if you have the energy.
-
Day 3
Zion → Bryce Canyon
Morning Narrows or a short canyon walk, then 1 h 50 m to Bryce. Sunset at Sunset Point and a night-sky session if the moon allows.
-
Day 4
Bryce → Capitol Reef
Sunrise at Bryce Point, then 2 h 30 m on Scenic Byway 12 — allow 5 hours with stops, because it climbs to 9,600 feet over Boulder Mountain. Arrive Torrey late afternoon.
-
Day 5
Capitol Reef → Moab
Morning: Hickman Bridge, the scenic drive, petroglyphs. Then 3 h 15 m to Moab via Interstate 70. Long day; leave by early afternoon.
-
Day 6
Arches and Canyonlands
Delicate Arch at sunrise, Canyonlands' Island in the Sky in the afternoon. Ambitious but achievable, because the two park gates are 20 minutes apart.
-
Day 7
Moab → Salt Lake City
3 h 45 m. Morning at Dead Horse Point or a short river walk, then north on US-191. Stop at the ghost-town turn-off near Thompson if you have time.
The one weak point
Day 6 squeezes two parks into one day. If you can add a night in Moab, do — Arches alone deserves a full day, and Canyonlands deserves another.

Route three
The 9-day version, done properly
The same loop with the pressure removed. Two nights everywhere that deserves it, and a full day in Moab's two parks rather than a compressed one.
This is the itinerary to use if Utah is a once-in-a-decade trip rather than a long weekend.
- Days 1–2
Salt Lake City → Springdale → Zion
Arrive, adjust, then a full canyon day with the Narrows on the second afternoon.
- Day 3
Kolob Canyons and on to Bryce
The northwestern section in the morning — genuinely empty — then 1 h 50 m east.
- Day 4
Bryce Canyon, full day
Sunrise, the classic loop, the scenic drive to the far viewpoints, night sky after dark.
- Day 5
Route 12 to Torrey
A driving day that feels like a destination. Grand Staircase–Escalante, Boulder Mountain, the Hogback ridge.
- Day 6
Capitol Reef
Hickman Bridge, Cassidy Arch, the scenic drive, the orchards. The quietest day of the trip.
- Day 7
Capitol Reef → Moab
3 h 15 m, arriving early enough for an evening at Dead Horse Point.
- Day 8
Arches
Sunrise at Delicate Arch, then the Windows, Landscape Arch and Devils Garden.
- Day 9
Canyonlands, then home
Mesa Arch at dawn, Grand View Point, then the 3 h 45 m drive north.

Route four
6 days: Wasatch powder, then canyon country
The combination most itineraries ignore. Ski three days out of Salt Lake City or Park City, then drive south to Moab while the desert is cool and empty.
This works best in February and early March: the snow base is at its deepest, and southern Utah is at its most comfortable.
- Days 1–3
Ski the Wasatch
Base in Salt Lake City for the Cottonwood Canyons (Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton) or in Park City for the two resorts there. Three ski days, one rest day folded in if the weather turns.
- Day 4
Drive south to Moab
3 h 45 m on US-191. Leave by mid-morning, arrive for a late lunch and an afternoon at Dead Horse Point.
- Day 5
Arches and Canyonlands
Delicate Arch at sunrise — and in February you may have it almost to yourself. Canyonlands in the afternoon.
- Day 6
Moab → Salt Lake City
Morning at Corona Arch or a short riverside walk, then the drive north to fly out.
Winter desert realities
Days are short — sunset around 5:30pm in February. Some Moab services close in winter, and the road to the Island in the Sky can ice over. Check conditions, and carry layers for both environments.

Route five
5 days: a gentle first trip with children
Zion and Bryce only, short drives, and trails chosen so nobody has a bad afternoon. No day exceeds three hours in the car.
- Day 1
Las Vegas → Springdale
2 h 45 m. Swim, settle in, early dinner. Do not attempt a hike on arrival day.
- Day 2
Zion, gently
Riverside Walk — flat, paved, shaded, and it ends at the mouth of the Narrows so older children can wade a little. Afternoon at the nature centre and an ice cream in town.
- Day 3
Emerald Pools, then Bryce
Short morning walk, then 1 h 50 m to Bryce Canyon City. Junior Ranger booklet from the visitor centre.
- Day 4
Bryce, below the rim
Queens Garden is 2.9 km and genuinely doable with children over six. The rim trail is flat and stroller-friendly. Ranger programme in the afternoon.
- Day 5
Bryce → Las Vegas
4 hours, with a picnic stop. Home before bedtime.
What makes this work
Short drives, one activity per day, and swimming pools at the lodging. The desert is spectacular but it is also hot, exposed and tiring for small children — plan for half-days and bring twice the water you think you need.

Planning questions
How many days do you need for a Utah national parks road trip?
Seven days is the practical minimum for all five parks if you drive yourself, and nine days is comfortable. Five days covers Zion, Bryce and one of the Moab parks. Anything under five days is better spent on two parks done properly.
Should you start in Las Vegas or Salt Lake City?
Las Vegas is closer to Zion and works best for a south-to-north route ending in Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City suits a north-to-south loop and is the better choice if you also want to ski. Both offer one-way hire, though drop-off fees apply.
Can you do the Mighty 5 in five days?
You can drive past all five in five days, but you will not enjoy it. That works out to roughly 300 km of driving a day plus hiking. Choose three parks and do them well instead.
Is it better to book accommodation in advance?
Yes, for Springdale, Moab and Bryce Canyon City especially. In-park lodging and campgrounds book out a year ahead, and gateway towns sell out months ahead in spring and autumn. St. George and larger towns are more forgiving.
What is the best month for a Utah road trip?
Late April to mid-May and mid-September to late October. Both windows give comfortable desert temperatures, thinner crowds outside holidays, and good light. July and August bring serious heat to Zion and Arches.
